How we analyze client needs before choosing technology

Before we pick a tech stack, we learn the business goals, the users, the existing infrastructure and the budget and time constraints.

Choosing technology is a crucial step in any IT project. Before deciding on a specific stack, though, it is essential to fully understand the client’s business needs. At Aseity we give this phase its own stage, because a well-conducted analysis prevents many issues later in the project. So how do we run it?

1. Understanding business goals

Every project has a purpose: process automation, better efficiency, higher sales or a new business model. At this stage we:

  • run workshops with the client,
  • learn the company’s strategy and long-term plans,
  • agree the key success indicators (KPIs).

2. Analyzing users and their needs

It is not enough to know what the company wants to achieve. We also need to understand the people who will use the system. We look at:

  • who will use the solution (customers, employees, business partners),
  • what their needs and expectations are,
  • what challenges they face with the current systems.

3. Reviewing the existing IT infrastructure

Before suggesting new technologies, we check what we will be working with:

  • existing systems and applications,
  • integration possibilities with new solutions,
  • data migration requirements.

4. Budget and time constraints

Even the best technology will not work if it cannot be implemented within the available resources. That is why we agree with the client:

  • what the budget is and what limits it has,
  • what the planned timeline is,
  • whether the project calls for a phased rollout.

5. Selecting technology based on the analysis

Only after these steps do we decide on technology. We consider:

  • scalability and future growth of the project,
  • implementation and maintenance costs,
  • availability of specialists in a given technology,
  • integration capabilities with existing systems.

Conclusion

Analyzing client needs is the foundation of a well-chosen technology. Without understanding the business, the users, the infrastructure and the budget, it is hard to make sound decisions. That is why we work closely with the client and fit the solution to their situation, not the other way round.
